Oh That Sphinx!

The purpose of the Great Sphinx has been debated over the years by many people.  Some say that it was built as a memorial to a Pharaoh while others believe that its purpose was to guard the Great Pyramids.  Other scholars believe that it was an astronomical observation device that marked the position of the sun as it was rising on the day of the spring equinox in the time of Leo the Lion (not to be confused with Tony the Tiger!). They think this because the body of the Great Sphinx is in the form of a lion

Lady Ra Ra

The Great Sphinx is associated with the Egyptian sun god, Ra.  Ra is a highly known god in Egypt, the citizens will pray for Ra to have a safe journey through the sky pulling the sun along through the day.  Then in the night the Egyptians thank Ra for the good day, I still wonder what the sun god Ra has to do with the Great Sphinx?  Some people think that the Great Sphinx represents the Pharaoh Khafre because it was built right in front of his pyramids, but the weird thing is that the Great Sphinx was built after Khafre's rein!?!

Wanted: The Egyptian Strangler

It's hard to believe that the word sphinx actually means strangler!  Not the name you would think of for this historical masterpiece.  The Great Sphinx is surrounded by two things, the first is a temple that lies in front of the Sphinx called the Old Sphinx Temple.  This temple was probably built during the same time as the Great Sphinx monument. Originally King Amenhotep II and King Thavtnose IV restored it to the new kingdom. The other thing by the Great Sphinx is the Pyramids of Giza. The Great Sphinx is supposed to be protecting the Great Pyramids from any danger coming its way.

Where Oh Where Was My Little Sphinx Built?

The Great Sphinx was built about 4500 years ago!  The Sphinx must have been built really carefully to be able to still be in pretty good shape today.  It was built in Giza near the great pyramids.  People say that the Great Sphinx is watching carefully, protecting the pyramids from danger.  It took years and years and years to build the Sphinx.  It was probably carved by hundreds of men.  If you wanted to help build the Great Sphinx of Giza you probably had to be a great artist and sculptor to get the job done right!  The workers either got a lot of medium size boulders and carved out a certain part each, or they used one big boulder and all worked on the Sphinx together.

The Sphinx we see today is not the same Sphinx that was built all those years ago, it has suffered significant damage from sand storms and other disasters.  Scholars believe that the Great Sphinx once had a beard and a nose.  Some people think that Napoleon's men should be held responsible because they are accused of using the Great Sphinx face for target practice.

You're A Great One Mr. Sphinx.

  The Great Sphinx is one of the greatest structures in all of Egypt.  It is a combination of a man and a lion, it has the head of a man and a body of a lion.  There are hundreds of Sphinx's in Egypt but none can compare to the Great Sphinx in Giza which stands 66 feet high and 240 feet long, that's huge!  It is still a popular structure in todays times.  Las Vegas is the home of the Luxor Hotel and Casino were they made a replica of the Great Sphinx (the Egyptians must be upset we copied the sphinx!).  The Great Sphinx used to be covered with sand almost neck deep, that's pretty deep for the Great Sphinx, it was probably covered during a sand storm and it was uncovered thousands of years later by the French engineer Emil Baraize.  It took him 11 years to finish the job!
